Salat (regular daily prayer) has a prescribed method
that must be followed, whereas Du'a may be performed in any manner. Salat has
prescribed timings, and it is fard (compulsory) to adhere to these, but Du'a
may be offered at any time.
There are many prerequisites for
Salat such as Wudu, clean place etc, but Du'a has none of these, not even
Taharah. If one forgoes even one single Salat intentionally, the person leaves
the pale of Islam, but abandoning Du'a (though a sin) doesn't incur this
situation. There are forbidden times of Salat, but no forbidden time to call
out to Allah (Dua).
