What do Muslims mean by the title 'Seal of the Prophets’?

Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) is the last messenger of Allah ever sent for the guidance of humanity. He is unique and distinct from other prophetic messengers in this regard. The whole chain of prophethood that began from Adam, was ended by Allah on the Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) It is Allah who designed this scheme of sending His chosen people to various communities and nations from time to time.

When Allah deemed it fit to stop this process of sending divine guidance, he sent Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) with a universal, perfect and incorruptible message, the Holy Quran. Allah gave an indication of the perfection of His message in this verse:

"This day have I perfected your religion for you; completed My favour upon you... (5:3).

Thus, the process of prophethood may resemble a long, detailed document that was finally completed in the form of Prophet Muhammad as well as sealed by the same. The Quran declares:

"and Mohammad is not the father of any of men among you; he is but the messenger of Allah and seal of prophets." (33:40).

The Prophet himself reiterated the same:

"I am the seal of prophets and there will be no prophet after me."
