Orhan: Islamic Governance, Justice and the Moral Ideal of Ottoman Ruling Huntsman:
The story of Orhan, as revealed in the drama is more than a record of heroism and war – it is an instructive on how Islamic governance should really look like. His personality mirrors that of a ruler with iman (faith) and insaf (justice), at the cornerstone in all acts.
At a time when power is so frequently abused, Orhan’s example shows us that true authority does not rest in the sword but in fear of God, empathy for our fellow human beings and responsibility to the truth.
Governance Based on Justice
Orhan’s reign demonstrates that justice is the basis of all Islamic states. He never was partial to his own ego, tribe, or identity. Instead he stood fast by the Qur'anic principle:
“Lo! Allah enjoineth justice and kindness, and giving to kinsfolk.”
(Surah An-Nahl 16:90)
It showed itself in how he settled disputes, cared for the weak and even held the powerful to account.
Leadership with Taqwa
Unlike rulers who sought worldly glory, Orhan’s power emanated from his strong spiritual connection. Before taking every major decision he consulted the scholars and trusted advisors; proof that taqwa and humility make a leader great.
Mercy as a Mark of Power
The drama just beautifully depicts how the heart of a Muslim ruler should be soft towards his people. “Showing Compassion to fellow human beings is among the teachings of Islam as well: The Holy Prophet Muhammad ﷺ led such a life full of kindness, compassion and mercy.” (Imam Abu Hanifa’s Al-fiqh-ul-akbar pg 54 verse 104) If for one who show’s compassion to his fellow human being has been mentioned in this way by Imam abu hanifa then Death penalty under any circumstances even after proving him wrong makes it against the sunnah.
Allah's most beloved are those who do good to other people."
At every step of Orhan’s rule, there was the enactment of this teaching.
Vision for a Just Society
His vision was not only to safeguard territory, but also to create a civilization founded on science, strength and morality. He made his country strong by the same means that make any nation strong, education, military discipline and public good fare.
A Message for Today’s Leaders
We realize, with Orhan’s character, that Islamic leadership isn’t just sashes and thrones: It is consisting of :
Responsibility
Fairness
Service to people
Fear of Allah
Falsehood met with courage
His tale should serve as a cautionary one for all of us modern day Muslims—leaders and ordinary folks alike—that true success can only be achieved when justice and faith are hand in hand.
